In a late 1960s Olivetti advertisement, a beautiful blonde woman sits in front of a typewriter with the caption " The typewriter so smart, she doesn’t have to be"
The irony is that the woman pictured was anything but dumb, her name was Shere Hite and she was working as a model to pay for her PhD in History at Columbia University.
Hite thought at the time that she had been chosen because of her impressive typing skills and did not know how her image would be used.The prejudice of the time about the inferiority of women, who were considered too light-hearted to understand and use mathematical, scientific or logical concepts is reflected in the advertisement.
But Shere Hite has not said her last word. She decides to support the injustices suffered by the female sex and returns in 1976 with her book "The Hite Report: A Nationwide study of female Sexuality".
The book would sell 50,000,000 copies and revolutionize the way women viewed their bodies.
