Gender-based violence is the ultimate means of domination, the most violent way to maintain social control, and its most extreme manifestation is femicide. The cause of domestic violence is not the pandemic. There is, of course, the possibility that in the conditions of the pandemic, the frequency of abusive behavior will increase by those who previously practiced any form of violence, many of whom became even more violent due to anxiety and fear about the pandemic, about the future, about their work. However, gender-based violence is a symptom of patriarchy. We react and try to treat the symptoms but forget that gender inequality is the cause. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), femicide is more common in countries with greater racial inequality and less female government representation. To reduce domestic violence, gender equality needs to be embedded individually and socially. Institutional and social changes are needed such that no form of gender-based violence is tolerated and that part of the responsibility is not shifted to us women by discussing what protection measures we can take.
Legal institutional framework is obviously a factor in supporting and helping victims - that's why the term needs to be legally recognized and life sentences should be life sentences - but change will come with overturning systems, attitudes and breaking stereotypes . This is achieved through education. The role of the school can be catalytic through actions and lessons aimed at gender biases, sexuality, concepts of consent, self-determination, etc.
